You’ve been struggling with the idea of getting a divorce from your spouse. They haven’t been around as much as you’d like, and you’re getting tired of waiting for them to spend time with you. You know that life is busy, but even when you make your best effort to be there, you don’t feel they’re doing the same for you.
After getting stood up at a restaurant for the third time, you decided that enough was enough and started to look into a divorce. You’re not sure if this is the right choice, though. What should you do?
Make sure divorce is the right option before you file
Once you file for a divorce, you can always decide not to pursue the case, but the emotional damage may be done. Instead of leading with divorce, you may want to talk to your spouse about going through marriage counseling. You should talk through your issues. Your spouse may not have realized that you were so upset by their behaviors, or they may not know how to make things better.
Take steps to protect yourself during negotiations
If they refuse to go to counseling or believe that everything is fine, that’s when you may want to consider divorce. If you know this may happen, then you might want to start collecting your financial documents and evidence of high-value assets. You want to have everything in order, so you can begin negotiating for half of your marital assets, or more, once you pursue a divorce.
This can be a difficult decision to make, but if you feel that you’re not going to see an improvement in your relationship, ending your marriage may be a good choice for you.
