Fighting for custody? Use these tips to prevail

You love your kids with all your heart, but their other parent has already said that they will be fighting for the most custody time. You work a normal 9-to-5 job and are willing to try to adjust your schedule and do what you can to make yourself more available to them.

As a parent who is fighting for custody, one good thing to know is that judges often encourage 50-50 parenting arrangements (or at least an agreement that is as equal as possible). Why? In the majority of cases, both of the parents are good people who have a right to see and raise their children.

If you want to make yourself stand out as an amazing parent to the judge in your case, there are a few things you can do. Here are three ideas to help you get custody.

1. Get good testimonies about how your support your children

Ask friends, doctors, relatives, teachers and others who know you to write to the court about your parenting. Their testimonies could help show that you are highly invested in your children’s care and are there for them when you’re needed.

2. Prepare your home for your kids

Another thing that will impress a judge is if you take the initiative to prepare a safe space for your children in your home. That may mean setting up two separate bedrooms for your son and daughter, buying them things they need for school and investing in them so that the judge takes you seriously.

3. Present yourself as a responsible person

Finally, present yourself as a responsible adult. Come to court dressed nicely and prepared to speak respectfully about your plans. Be polite and concentrate on making a good impression.
